Hello world!
This is my first post on the my.vanderbilt.edu platform, and I hope I’m doing it right! Here is a picture of my girlfriend and I at my fraternity’s winter semi-formal event in downtown Nashville:

Even though this is a picture of my feet (and I don’t like feet) this picture best represents who I am. I LOVE the outdoors and being outside finding peace in the presence of nature. This picture was taken last summer on a family vacation to Michigan. The Lake Superior was literally in my backyard and I loved being able to wake up and have breakfast on the porch and sit in the presence of the beauty surrounding me. Across the lake you can see the coastline of Canada. It was amazing. Also, I am a huge flip-flop wearer and chaco lover, but teva’s are cool too.

This is a photo of me on the equator line in Ecuador! One thing that was pretty cool about going to the Equator line(s) was seeing the demonstrations of the Coriolis effect. I say “line(s)” because there were actually two. One was at the memorial pictured above, which was created by French settlers with imprecise instruments, and the second was about 500 m North of there, which has been verified as the Earth’s actual Equator line.

My name is Alan Leeser, I am a junior and majoring in mechanical engineering. I’m taking this class to satisfy a technical elective and because I have always been interested in outer space. There are so many random facts about the universe that are mind blowing. For example, the density of Saturn is only .687 g/cm^3 which means it would be able to float on water. Hi, this is my first post on my Astro 201 class blog.
Although this is supposed to be a blog about astronomy, I am going to start this post with my classical guitar.

I’ve always loved music. After I listened to the prelude of this piece, I thought I must learn guitar!

Enough gibbering about music, let me talk about astronomy now.
I took Astronomy 102: Stars and Galaxies last semester. That was a fantastic course! I fell in love with astronomy, especially things like Big Bang, M-theory and so on. The history of astronomy is also fascinating. From Copernicus to Cannon to Shapley to Hubble, astronomy is one of the disciplines that undergo most breakthroughs.
Professor Weintraub recommended us some astronomy books to write a review about. I chose The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. It talks about some important theories in string theory and its revolution. The book also spans relativity and quantum mechanics. I later discovered that PBS NOVA made a 3-episodes documentary based on this book. If you are interested, please look at the following link:

Eiffel Tower by me
I got to travel the world this summer abroad! This is my favorite picture showing the beautiful Eiffel Tower lit up at night. I am making a “Delt” with my hands as it is tradition for any Tri Delta member to do this anytime they are at cool sites abroad! Definitely something I will remember forever. It is so beautiful!
One of My Favorite Places on Earth

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places on the planet. I took this picture facing away from Timberline Falls, shortly after I’d climbed down it (a scary but exhilarating experience). If you look just below the center of the photo, you can see The Loch, just one of the many beautiful alpine lakes you can hike to in the park. I spent a summer in Colorado, and this was taken on my last and favorite hike of the summer.
