Leading up to the week of service, each site meets to learn history, relevance, and important context regarding its theme. Participants are equipped with principles of social justice in order to engage with an issue falling into one of the six family groups. This experience has the potential to transform participants\u2019 views of themselves, their Vanderbilt community, and the world.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of\u00a0Vanderbilt students each Spring participate in the three core parts of Vanderbilt ASB:<\/p>\n<p>Education: Sites spend the end of first semester and the beginning of second semester learning about the service issue on which their site is focused.<\/p>\n<p>Service: Participants are immersed in a week of service where they not only learn more about their service\u00a0issue but also get hands-on experience with working with their populations.<\/p>\n<p>Reflection: Participants continuously reflect on the work that they have done throughout the education and service aspects of ASB in order to unpack complex ideas as a group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vanderbilt Alternative Spring Break is a student-run service organization that empowers students from all corners of Vanderbilt\u2019s campus in an ongoing process of education, service, and reflection.
