At Vanderbilt, extensive collaborations with experimentalists including \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ron Schrimpf, Dan Fleetwood, and Robert Reed (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) on defect dynamics that underlie radiation-induced phenomena and on reliability issues in semiconductor devices (Si and III-V devices, carbon-based and 2D devices). A MURI multi-university program on device reliability of III-V HEMTs is on-going with participants from University of California Santa Barbara, MIT, the Ohio State University, and University of Bristol.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kirill Bolotin (Physics) and his group on two-dimensional materials and structures<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Richard Haglund (Physics) and his group on optical properties, phase transitions, and other phenomena in phase-changing materials<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Yia-Qong Xu (Physics\/Electrical Engineering) and her group on graphene<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Janet Macdonald (Chemistry) and her group on investigations of nanoparticles<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A second major collaborative program is ongoing with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory since 1995 (Pantelides spends one day per week there, on average) including \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/web.ornl.gov\/info\/awards\/cf\/cfcitations\/cfbios\/pennycoo.shtm\">Steve Pennycook<\/a> and <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/stem.ornl.gov\/\"> his microscopy group<\/a>: this collaboration combines theory and scanning transmission electron microscopy to study atomic-scale structures and electronic and magnetic properties of complex systems \u2013 semiconductors, superconductors, ceramics, transition-metal oxides, interfaces, two-dimensional materials and nanoparticles.\u00a0 Students and post-docs doing both theory and\/or microscopy reside at ORNL. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Xiaoguang Zhang and two resident post-docs we \u00a0explore space-charge limited currents and capture\/emission of carriers in semiconductor devices.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Funding comes several sources including DOE, ONR, DTRA, Samsung Corp. and the <\/strong><a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/nsf.gov\"><strong>NSF<\/strong><\/a><strong> which also supports <\/strong><a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/physics.bd.psu.edu\/faculty\/tuttle\/NSFworkshops.htm\"><strong>outreach workshops for high school teachers in NW PA<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong> <a href=\"\/sokratespantelides\/2013\/08\/NSF_Goalie-_Web.pdf\">2009 &#8211; 2014: A NSF funded multi-university program on the oxidation of SiC with experimental participation by Sarit Dhar (Auburn University), Len Feldman (Rutgers University) and Gerd Duscher (University of Tennessee Knoxville).<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The group is engaged in theoretical and computational research in materials and nanostructures, aiming to elucidate atomic-scale properties in the context of available experimental data.
