{"id":1332,"date":"2013-10-08T18:54:27","date_gmt":"2013-10-08T18:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/softwarestore.vanderbilt.edu\/?p=1332"},"modified":"2013-10-08T18:54:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T18:54:27","slug":"new-top-level-domains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/my.dev.vanderbilt.edu\/softwarestore\/2013\/10\/new-top-level-domains\/","title":{"rendered":"New Top Level Domains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icann.org\/\">Internet Corporation for  Assigned Names and Numbers<\/a> (ICANN) oversees the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\">public domain name system<\/a> (DNS).\u00a0 Currently, the system includes 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .COM, .ORG, and .NET.<\/p>\n<p>ICANN approved a plan more than two years ago to add hundreds of new gTLDs to the DNS.\u00a0 The new gTLD categories include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Business (19 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Real Estate (30 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Industry (21 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Geographic (85 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Money &amp; Finance (32 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Culture &amp; Life Style (113 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Sports &amp; Recreation (44 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Technology (53 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Entertainment (42 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Food &amp; Shopping (33 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Professions (38 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Health &amp; Fitness (16 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Retail (38 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Education (19 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Government &amp; Policies (7 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Travel &amp; Leisure (12 TLDs)<\/li>\n<li>Faith (5 TLDs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Vanderbilt community will be able to register domains with the new extensions through the Vanderbilt Software Store.\u00a0 We expect to begin offering the new service in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the public domain name system (DNS).\u00a0 Currently, the system includes 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .COM, .ORG, and .NET.
