Early stages of eye development involve the invagination of E8.5 ectoderm to form the optic cup. (Fig.1A-D) Optic fissure closure occurs during E10.5-E12.5 to generate the continuous presumptive optic structures (Fig.1E-F).

As the eye develops the peripheral retina becomes hypoxic. Hypoxia induces the release of Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which induces vascularization of the peripheral retina. (Fig.2)
