According to Supovitz (2010), a cycle of data may include: (1) data capture; (2) meaning-making process; (3) information sharing; and (4) knowledge organization.<\/li>\n<li>Today\u2019s educators operate in information\u2010rich environments, in which numerous performance data exist that may inform decision\u2010making and facilitate e\ufb00orts to promote personalization for academic and social learning (Anderson, Leithwood &amp; Strauss, 2010).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0What is Data?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Data can be generated by teachers in their classroom, by teams, or by the school and district. Student data can take many forms, including:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Academic data<\/strong> &#8211; Grades, test scores, GPA, lists of students who are failing particular classes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behavioral data<\/strong> &#8211; Attendance, referrals, detentions, expulsions, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social emotional data<\/strong> &#8211; Information gathered through adult-student interactions; data collected through Rapid Check-Ins with students, parent feedback, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below is a short video on the types of student data teachers and administrators can use.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3g4ifVVf-RI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How can PASL schools and teachers make intentional use of data?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">What Can Schools Do?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Schools with strong professional communities have discussions about challenges facing their students. These conversations include discussions about students\u2019 discipline issues, in addition to discussions on other topics such as attendance and academic performance (Copeland, 2010).<\/li>\n<li>Successful PASL schools talk about data in a safe, positive climate.<\/li>\n<li>They adopt a balanced approach to data sources, using internal and sometimes informal data to complement externally derived data.<\/li>\n<li>Successful schools use data to identify and refer students who are struggling academically, socially, and or emotionally for speci\ufb01c programs and resources in the school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">What Can Teachers Do?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>PASL teachers collect student information regularly and share this data with each other to meet the needs of students they have in common.<\/li>\n<li>Teachers come together around data to discuss instructional ideas for \u201cmoving\u201d students.<\/li>\n<li>They refrain from using data as a &#8220;gotcha&#8221;\u00a0by using positive language, encouragement, and targeted support\u00a0aimed at improving the student&#8217;s\u00a0grades, behavior, etc.<\/li>\n<li>PASL teachers share information with each other about successful approaches for putting PASL into practice, therefore cultivating a collection of \u201cbest practices\u201d to use in their classrooms.<\/li>\n<li>PASL teachers share student information with core administrators, counselors, and others staff to make them aware of any student issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below is a short video on how student data can benefit teachers and students.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cgrfiPvwDBw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For more information on some of the best practices that schools are using to collect and use data, refer to the following documents:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3108\/2019\/04\/Best-Practices-for-Collecting-Using-Data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Best Practices for Collecting &amp; Using Data<\/a>\u00a0(pdf);\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3108\/2019\/04\/Best-Practices-for-Collecting-Using-Data.docx\" target=\"_blank\">Best Practices for Collecting &amp; Using Data<\/a>\u00a0(doc)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following tools offer examples of how educators\u00a0may enact these principles of intentional use of data to better understand school data and how it may be used to facilitate students\u2019 academic and social-emotional well-being.
