It introduces the concept of &#8220;grit,&#8221; which encompasses stamina, passion, and determination to complete and achieve a task. Students can identify areas of their lives where they have displayed grit, whether in school, sport, extracurricular, or other arena of life. This is an easy activity to start the conversation and help students start to understand what motivates them and how they can transfer this to other areas in their lives.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Implementation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This activity takes place during one class period. It is suggested for grades 9-11 towards the beginning of the school year. A projector will be needed to display the video.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Details<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>Lesson<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Watch Ted Talk \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance?language=en\">Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance<\/a>\u201d by Angela Lee Duckworth<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance\" width=\"750\" height=\"423\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8211; Pose the following questions for review and discussion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">1. What does the speaker say about the ability to learn?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> 2. According to her research, what correlations did the speaker find between performance in life and school?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> 3. Name three details about how the speaker describes grit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Encourage students to think of their own definitions of grit. In what areas of their lives to do they display grit (i.e. school, extracurriculars, jobs\u2026)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Key<\/strong> Points<\/h4>\n<p>-Students are more likely to learn thanks if they work hard and long enough<br \/>\n&#8211; \u201cmotivational perspective\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211; Grit is unrelated to IQ or talent<br \/>\n&#8211; Stamina and passion is important for future goals<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Connections to other components<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This activity also connects with Goal Achievement.
