This page will introduce you to the types of saws we have and when to use each one.<\/p>\n<h2>Safety First!<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">The blades are sharp! (yes, really) Look, don&#8217;t touch, if you need to inspect them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">Always wear safety goggles when sawing. Saws can shatter, and no one wants flying metal shrapnel in your eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">Use a vise or a clamp to secure your workpiece. The blade can rotate to cut at any angle. You can set the saw to a precise angle from 45 to 90 degrees, and the guides will keep the saw angled correctly as you cut. The yellow pegs can be used to help secure your workpiece to the metal fence, although you might need to use additional clamps to fully secure your workpiece.<\/p>\n<h3>Hacksaw<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1292\/2015\/03\/Hacksaw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-280\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1292\/2015\/03\/Hacksaw-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1292\/2015\/03\/Hacksaw-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1292\/2015\/03\/Hacksaw-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn-dev.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-my-dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1292\/2015\/03\/Hacksaw-650x650.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use the hacksaw to cut <strong>metal and plastic<\/strong>. If you need to cut wood, one of the other saws is probably a better choice. Use both hands when using this saw: one to grip the handle and the other to hold the front of the frame.<\/p>\n<h2>Effective Sawing<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\"><strong>Clamp your workpiece<\/strong> and cut as close to the clamp as possible to limit chatter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\"><strong>Mark your workpiece.<\/strong> Measure twice, cut once.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 19px\"><strong>Don&#8217;t push down on the saw<\/strong>\u2014putting more muscle into it can actually slow you down. Instead, simply push the saw back and forth and let the teeth do the work for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">Use the full length of the saw. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">You&#8217;ll finish more quickly if you use longer strokes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saws in the Design Studio can be used to cut a workpiece in two or to make slots or grooves.
