We are particularly interested in the bacterium\u00a0<em>Helicobacter pylori<\/em>\u00a0and its role as a causative agent of stomach cancer.\u00a0<em>H. pylori<\/em>\u00a0is the only bacterial species that commonly causes cancer in humans, and has been designated as a Class I carcinogen by the World Health Organization.\u00a0<em>H. pylori<\/em>\u00a0colonizes the stomach in about half of the global population, and stomach cancer is the third leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide.\u00a0 One of our main goals is to elucidate molecular mechanisms by which\u00a0<em>H. pylori<\/em>\u00a0infection can lead to stomach cancer. Another main goal is to understand why some\u00a0<em>H. pylori<\/em>-infected individuals develop stomach cancer, whereas most others remain asymptomatic or derive health benefits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Recruitment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">We are actively recruiting\u00a0graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Examples of projects currently underway in the lab include investigation of\u00a0(i) secreted\u00a0<em>H. pylori\u00a0<\/em>toxins (VacA and CagA), (ii) an\u00a0<em>H. pylori\u00a0<\/em>type IV secretion system that delivers CagA into gastric epithelial cells, (iii)\u00a0<em>H. pylori\u00a0<\/em>outer membrane proteins that interact with host cells, (iv) <em>H. pylori<\/em>-induced alterations in host cells and animal models, (v)\u00a0dietary composition as a determinant of gastric cancer risk, and (vi) strain-specific\u00a0<em>H. pylori<\/em>\u00a0constituents that are\u00a0 determinants of gastric cancer risk.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Please see further details about projects under the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/my.dev.vanderbilt.edu\/coverlab\/our-research\/\">Our Research<\/a>\u201d tab.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the Cover lab (Vanderbilt University) Brief description of research topics: Research projects in the Cover laboratory are focused on bacterial infections, bacteria-host interactions, and the role of microbes in development of cancer.
