As William Luis explains, Olivera Rubio\u2019s work embraces black identity and \u201cfocuses on the strong, determined, remarkable, beautiful, and proud black figure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Join the Latino and Latina Studies Program and the\u00a0<em>Afro-Hispanic Review <\/em>on\u00a0Monday, December 4, at<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>4:10 pm\u00a0in the Kissam MPR for &#8220;The Portraits of Afro-Cuban Artist: Erik Olivera Rubio&#8221; with reception to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Havana, the artist was surrounded by traditions of the Yoruba people, who are the descendants of Africans uprooted from their homes by slavery and transported to the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>Olivera Rubio, a graduate of San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, Havana, has exhibited in London, Italy, France, Florida and throughout Havana, Cuba.
